Lulu's Cairo Rescues prepares all animals for travel to the UK, Europe and Canada. Each animal has to go through Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) regulations.
This can take 4 to 5 months to prepare and involves a lot of paperwork and patience!
Firstly in basic terms, the animals all have a rabies vaccine, then, after 30 days they have blood drawn. The blood sample is sent to Germany where it is checked (titre test) for antibodies. If over 0.5 iu/ml they pass and the animals are issued a health certificate. They then have to wait 3 months to travel to the UK or Europe. (If the test fails this process has to be repeated).
All animals arrive with a vaccination card, which has to have the correct information. Everything needs to be in date and match or the animals risk quarantine. They also need a health certificate. The animals will see a vet within 10 days of departure for a health check to show they are fit for travel.
Before leaving, the animals will all be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and treated for parasites. The animals also have their teeth cleaned. Only on rare occasions will a cat not be neutered. This is usually if they are old or the operation puts the animal at risk in Egypt. Egyptian neutering can have its own issues, also for females.
It is recommended that you take pet insurance just in case before arrival.
For the UK:
On arrival cats and dogs may come in consignments and arrive with other animals from different rescuers or just from Lulu's. It is the law that all the animals on consignment must stay at a Defra approved accommodation for 48 hours until pick up.
Due to COVID-19 regulations, it has been difficult to find international flights for our animals. At the moment we are trying to get numbers down, so we are preparing our cats and dogs in batches of 10 roughly to travel to the UK. It gets expensive and this is just about a manageable level. We work with rescues in the UK, but will gladly home to private adopters.
We are a small rescue run by volunteers with limited help so please be patient.
Thank you so very much!
