Lulu's Cairo Rescues is a small nonprofit charity that helps animals in Egypt. We are based in the UK, but on the frontline in Cairo, Egypt.
Ancient Egyptians worshipped many animals for thousands of years. Dogs were valued for their ability to protect and hunt. Cats were thought to be magical creatures, capable of bringing good luck to people. Nowadays there are a lot of problems concerning animal rights in Egypt. People are not properly educated about the value of neutering, and there are no strict laws against animal cruelty.
We have been rescuing cats and dogs in Egypt since 2015. We now specialise in cat rescue. It all started when there was mass poisoning on the streets of the country's capital. Desperate to save lives, Lulu Elmati, our dedicated rescuer, picked up the animals she was feeding on a daily basis to save their lives. A small group of animal lovers joined together to support her, so an apartment was rented.
Now we have a three story rescue, in the desert. Every day is a struggle, but it is worth it to know the animals are safe from torture, injury and starvation. We try and home as many animals as we can, but for those who are too sick to travel, we give them continuous sanctuary.
Our rescue is run by Cairo native Lulu Elmati who is responsible for the day to day care of animals.
Many of the cats in Lulu's care have either been abandoned, found sick, mistreated, abused, tortured or moved away from their mum when only a couple of weeks old. Many are long stay. Lulu also feeds animals on the streets. We home as many as possible with limited finance.
Our amazing volunteers are here to make a difference. We take our passion for animals and turn it into action. Think you would be a good fit for our team? Interested in doing a fundraiser? Things you want to donate for our monthly auctions for animal food? Get in touch for more information!
Stray animals are all around the streets of Egypt. The streets are harsh, offering no sanctuary. Often cats and dogs are literally living off the garbage. Some animals are found dumped in front of petshops or vets with their bandages still on!
The animals are often in a terrible state when they arrive at our rescue, and in need of urgent medical care. Our mission is to rehome stray animals in desperate need giving them urgent vet care and treatment, and finding them loving, forever homes.
Please take a look at our adoptable cats. All are neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested for FIV/Felv. Some are already prepared and if not It can take 4 months ( minimum) to 5/6 months to prepare a cat for travel. If you require any further information we will be pleased to help.

We rehome to the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Canada mainly, and certain states in the USA. Most European countries rely on flight parents.
We also neuter animals on the streets to save future suffering.
Please help us help vulnerable animals. Fears that pets can transmit COVID-19 virus have led many owners to abandon their animals. Pets have also been thrown out on the streets after their owners passed away. Animals are routinely poisoned and the average pet owner will not neuter. To make matters worse the Egyptian government has added tax on pet food and classed it as a luxury.
We take care of 130+ cats and 30+ dogs. We are desperate for donations for food, bills and vet care. Many thanks!

Full sponsorship of an animal is £20 per month, but we are very grateful for a partial sponsorship of any animal on our adoption page. Without your help we cannot afford neutering, food, boarding, medical care, rent, wages for cleaning, blood tests, vaccines, and preparation for travel.
